11 Questions With Sensational Dutch DJ Luuk van Dijk
"After thinking very hard... I decided to not do it and I still am extremely happy with that decision, because now I’m walking a path that is really mine, I don’t have to make any concessions and I am musically free to do whatever I want to do."
- Luuk Van Dijk
Today copywriters Words Do The Talking get the total pleasure of interviewing Luuk van Dijk: Amsterdam's freshest, most open and infectiously energetic house DJ.
Check out his exceptional new E.P. here
Luuk's journey into the world of house music is inspiring to say the least. He went to electronic music school Herman Brood Academy, where the likes of Martin Garrix and Dante Klein blossomed. He has performed with some of the greatest DJs on the planet.
He has played at incredible venues like STRAF_WERK, Awakenings, Hyte and Amsterdam-Open-Air. And declined mega music deals to follow his own path. Like we said, to call his story inspiring is an understatement.
Thanks to his dedication, his drive and listening to his gut feeling, Luuk has gone from 'the one to watch' to being 'the one that's watched'.
Throughout his Q & A we delve a little deeper into what drives Luuk's passions, how he develops his talents and how he has and still is establishing himself in the house and tech-house music industry.

Q. To give our readers a flavour of how you sound - any sets or tracks you'd recommend having a listen to whilst reading this Q & A?
A. The set I did for STRAF_WERK is a selection of tunes I really like over the last couple of months, brilliant night this was!

Q. Describe yourself, your music and your character in just 3 words.
A. Energetic, happy, soulful.
Q. What else makes you tick besides music?
A. I have this obsession with Nike Air Max! It started a couple of years ago when I bought this super exclusive pair (I didn’t know) and I instantly knew I needed to have the coolest sneakers out there. Was easier said than done haha.
Q. Dream person/people you'd like to collaborate with?
A. Got to be Kerri Chandler. Put the man behind the keys and there he goes. He makes the most beautiful house tracks around. And Jamie Jones of course.
Q. Best music festival you've performed at? What was it like in the moment?
A. All the festivals in Holland are insane but STRAF_WERK Festival some weeks ago was definitely one of my highlights. I was super happy with my set, they gave me a headline spot I couldn’t be happier with (20:00-21:30hrs) and the vibe was soooooo good. I guess the recording will be online very soon and then you can be a part of how it was to be partying with 1000 ravers and share the same energy.
57 seconds of bliss right here.

Q. We'll keep an eye out. So Luuk, how have your life experiences shaped you as a musician?
A. Because of my musical background, my father being a music teacher and my mom being a professional opera singer, music was always around in my early years. I played the piano for 7 years when I was younger and eventually I started to make my own compositions on the piano.
Later my father came home with this music program called “Cubase” which you can make your own electronic music with. Not long after I was making my own dance tracks and DJ’ing at birthdays and other parties for (mostly myself) and my friends.
At age 16 I was admitted to the electronic music school 'Herman Brood Academy', a place where a lot of talent gets developed in a professional way like Martin Garrix, Dante Klein, VNTM Live and De Sluwe Vos. That helped me so much, I learnt almost everything about the business. What I didn’t learn I eventually experienced in the real world. I came across different paths and had to make a lot of choices but I’m really happy with the path I chose! Still learning and getting more professional - wiser every day!
Q. What have been the struggles you have faced getting into the industry?
A. I didn’t have that many heavy struggles but I always find it difficult making choices and if there’s one thing this industry is all about, it's choices. As you’re evolving into an artist a lot of stuff will be coming your way, things you want, things you don’t want. It can be really helpful having other minds help you think but how cheesy it sounds, it’s your life, you decide what’s happening. 5 years ago I was asked to make the deal I was waiting for my whole life but when that moment finally came, I had this strange negative feeling about it. All my friends and family were telling me I had to do it, because I always wanted this. After thinking very hard about it, I decided to not do it and I still am extremely happy with that decision. Because now I’m walking a path that is really mine, I don’t have to make any concessions and I am musically free to do whatever I want to do.
Q. Any tips or tricks you'd offer someone just starting their music career?
A. Be generous, help others and they’ll help you. As simple as it is, I’ve experienced a lot of people being negative in the scene and receiving negative energy back as a result. People will like you more if you’re nice and if you show others that your will to reach the top is strong, they will believe in you and help wherever they can.
Q. Brilliant advice thank you. On that note, what has been your biggest career achievement?
A. Has got to be my former release with Hot Creations. This has been my biggest goal since producing music. I always looked up to Jamie Jones and my tracks finally being good enough for his label and the man signing it, was truly something else. Milestone for sure.
Q. Incredible! Where can we see you next?
A. The next big thing I’m playing at is Elrow Town Festival in Amsterdam!
Q. And finally, what's next for you Luuk?
A. My next EP dropping at Audiojack’s Gruuv is something I’ve been looking out for! 3 very different tracks I’ve been playing a lot last year. They show a slightly different side of me but it’s still definitely Luuk!
