It's Time To Say Thank You To Your Miserable Office And Miserable Colleagues

Why Working In A Miserable Office Could Be The Best Thing That Happens To You

Picture

You've probably just read this article's title and you're now thinking: "What on earth are you talking about?! How can being in an office which quite literally sucks the life out of me 5 days a week, brings me to my knees and has made me despise working life, be the best thing that has happened to me?! ARE YOU MAD?"

Okay, okay give us a chance to explain this one with 3 quick points.

1. You are acutely aware your office is miserable and as a result, it's not a healthy environment to be in. This makes you different to most of your colleagues, who have either accepted that this is the ambiance of the office or, worse still, think. It's. NORMAL.

So you can at the very least safely set yourself apart from the rest of the neggy Nellies, which should offer you a huge sigh of relief. You are not and will not become an energy evaporator, happiness hijacker, nor a glorified gossiper. And this my friend, is a fabulous thing.

2. You can take pleasure from knowing you're in fact making the miserable meddlers question everything they've ever known about working life.

They'll be looking at you everyday wondering why you're not moping around, bad-mouthing your manager and why they keep getting wafts of charisma every time you skip past. Trust us when we tell you that they'll be spending at least 4 hours a day trying to figure out what species you actually are.

If you get close enough (we do not advise that you do), you can hear their minds churning: "Have I been doing it all wrong? Is the office not supposed to be riddled with resentment? Am I not supposed to be a sour-faced puss? Oh balls!" Hey, you may have actually started the journey of enlightenment for a few people, but fortunately you won't be a part of that office long enough to see them blossom. Such a shame.

3. This is our favourite point. So skip the rest and get to this juicy bit.

Being in a miserable office environment will actually push and pull you in ways you never would have been before. What do we mean? Well, if you were content with your office life, you'd plateau and most likely stay put for too long (that's the negative nelly in us there coming out - but it's true).

By being exposed to such a hideous atmosphere for 40 to 50+ hours a week, your mind is now able to think outside of the ordinary and ask for more from life. Because you know you deserve more and you feel ready to take a leap to get it.

It's these encounters in the office which we may think we've learnt nothing from, but in fact they give us a drive and a willingness to seek better opportunities, see what else is out there and show us that settling is never the right option.

You may even be inspired enough to start up your own business, and if that is the case then bravo you. You've taken a shoddy situation, gained from it and used it to your advantage. And you'll know what to look for (and what to avoid) in your own work force when it comes to expanding and choosing your own team. No entry neggy Nellies.

Plus, you'll be the best leader a business could ask for, because you've experienced first-hand the detrimental effects a negative workforce can have on a business.

Next stop: Someplace new?

Abso-bl**dy-lutely.
